Sachin Tendulkar has mostly celebrated his birthdays in a quiet manner and away from the public eye over the years. On the eve of his 38th birthday too, the Little Maestro chose to make the occasion special in his own way by fulfilling the wishes of physically challenged soldiers based in Pune on Friday.

Since his cricketing commitments made it impossible for Tendulkar to meet them personally, he interacted with the soldiers undergoing rehabilitation at the paraplegic centre in Pune's Khadki cantonment via a video-conference which was lively and invoked lots of laughter.

While the jawans asked him several questions, Tendulkar too had a few to ask one of them being, "When you (soldiers) go out on a mission there are no retakes. Where do you get the courage from, especially at times when it is a matter of life and death? To which, the jawans replied, "Whatever we do as soldiers is with the responsibility of serving the nation and when we are at the front it is about that and nothing else matters. One doesn't even think about whether you'll stay alive or not." The answer had Tendulkar moved.

On a lighter note, a jawan asked him about his trips to Dehradun and if the hill station was one of his favourite. Tendulkar said, "I have been there only once but the television channels keep showing the same footage. But it's a very nice place and I loved the long morning walks in solace there."

He was also asked about his love for tennis to which Tendulkar quipped, "For me as a kid the choice was between tennis and cricket and I feel that I didn't make a bad choice. Though, I still love tennis and watch it whenever I get time."

About every kid wanting to play cricket and be like him, Tendulkar emphasized that it was for every parent to allow their children to pursue their interests. "Children have their own choices, they should be encouraged. For the kids, it is important that they pursue their dreams with devotion."

Tendulkar promised to pay a visit to the jawans. "I would like to play table tennis with you and would like to learn to play basketball when I come to meet you," he said.

Tendulkar also cut a cake and exchanged bouquets with the soldiers on camera.

Saeed Anwar was leader between 1997 to 2009 until Charls Coventry equaled him. John Edrich's 82 was the highest score in the first ever ODI, which was then broken by DL Amiss who made first hundered in 50 over cricket = 103 in 1972. Roy Fredericks broke that record inside a year with his 105, which was then broken by English David Lloyd's 116 not out against Pakistan another year later in 1974.

Glenn Turner of New Zealand owned the record with his 171* against East Africa for 8 year, since 1975 to 1983 when Kapil Dev made 175* against Zimbabwe. Vivian Richards then held the record for 12 years, from 31 May 1984 to 21 May 1997 when Saeed Anwar hit 194 against Indians at Chennai as you seen in the above list.

Recently at Rajkot, on 14 Nov 2008, Yuvraj Singh scored a 64 ball century against England.. This was the second fastest 100 by an Indian behind 62 ball thriller by Mohammad Azharuddin against New Zealand at Baroda in 17 December 1988.

Internationally - Yuvraj's hundred stood at 8th position.

Yuvraj was injured, and hence, had Gautam Gambhir as runner (trick?). Otherwise, I'm sure this Punjab Left hander could have scored the first double century in one day Internationals as well.

I've done one better, and included the list fastest century ever made by all test playing nations, cause I firmly believe this record is also going to change frequently due to the kind of bats batsmen use these days and the evolution of Twenty20 games.

Currently, Shahid Afridi of Pakistan holds the record of fastest century in one day cricket match.. Afridi reached his fifty off 18 balls.

Interesting note : Record for most sixes in an innings belongs to Xavier Marshall of West Indies for his 12 sixes in innings of 157 not out against Canada in August 2008.. Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi have hit 11 sixes in one innings whereas MS Dhoni, Mark Boucher, Mathew Hayden and Brendon McCullum of New Zealand have hit 10 sixes in one innings.

3. Ricky Ponting's test century list : year by year

Ricky Ponting is the greatest batsman produced by Australian cricket, ever. I know there are many oldies who would argue as Bradman was the best but I firmly believe Sir Don played in an era when cricket wasn't as rutheless and demanding as it is now in morden day when Ponting has mesmerised world wide audiences..

TV replays have made batsmen's life difficult, finding chunk in their armour series after series while Bradman played against just 4 country in his whole career whereas Ricky has centuries against all 9 other test playing nations.

Thinking along those lines, I realised a list of all test century made by Ricky Ponting will be an interesting read, seeing how Aussie run machine has gone through his career. so, here it is :-

Ricky Ponting's highest test score is 257 at Melbourne cricket ground back in December 2003, against India. His second best individual score is 242 as you can see in following table but interestingly, both of these biggest innings by Tasmania tiger came in back to back matches but didn't fetch a win for his team.. Indians managed to draw that 3rd test after winning that Adelaide match, coming from behind, chasing down 233 in 4th innings, the exact score that Rahul Dravid made in 1st innings to inspire visitors. Overall, Ricky has 5 double century besides getting out in 190s twice and 6 times in 90s.

Ricky Ponting's first test century was against England at Leeds in 1997 Ashes series and so far, Aussie legend has scored 18 century away from home. Ricky scored no century in year 2007, 2004 and 1998 but his most prolific year have been 2006 in which he made no less than 7 century in a calender year.

It's no secret that Ponting enjoys fast bowling rather than spinners as his most runs have come against South Africans but has a solitary century against spin heavy Sri Lankans. Ricky Ponting has batted at number 3 for 9 consecutive years now and all his hundreds have come either at no.3 position or no.6 where he started his career before being promoted up the order.

Ricky is a fast scorer, so I noticed his slowest test century as the one he made against West Indies back in March 1999. Ricky, with a strike rate of less than 36 runs per hundred balls, was giving support to captain Steve Waugh who made 199 in that game but Windies managed to win the match, by 1 wkt.

4. Highest individual score by a batsman in test match cricket .

Sachin Tendulkar may own the record of the batsman with most runs in test cricket (and in onedayers), Brain Lara, former West Indian artist with bat, will take heart from his highest score by a batsman in an innings which he owned for 9 years before Mathew Hayden broke it.

6 months since Hayden's hurricane against Zimbabweans, at same Venue (Recreation ground in Antigua) and against same opposition (England), Brain Lara snatched back his phenomenal record, scoring the first and only 400 in test match cricket till today.

Drawback : Not that Brain Lara's record can't be broken today, but modern day batters have lost the patience with loads of ODI & T20 cricket played around the world and also the teams have become more result oriented than in Lara's days whose best test match score didn't fetch a win for his team (England earned a draw!).

Capables : Virendra Sehwag of India and Chris Gayle of West Indies who like to play their shots when most batsman like to defend in test cricket.

Note : Double centuries may won a batsman a test match for his country, but not a place in elite list below, which comprises only 300s.

Now among remaining teams, the highest test score by a New Zealand batsman is by Martin Crowe = 299 against Sri Lanka at Wellington in January 1991, best test score by a South African batsman is by Graeme Smith = 277 AB de Villiers = 278* vs Pakistan at Abu Dhabi in November 2010. Top test score by a Bangladesh batsman is 158* by Mohammad Asharful against India and highest test match score by a Zimbabwe batsman is by David Houghton = 266 against Sri Lanka at Bulawayo in October 1994.

Record Holders :
Highest test score was first owned by CG Bannerman who made 165 in that first ever test match between England and Australia in year 1877. Then, WL Murdoch of Australia broke the record in 1884 with his 211 and in process became the first batsman to score a double century in test cricket. Robert Foster took away the record with his 287 against Australia in 1903, before it was broken by A Sandham's first ever triple century = 325. WR Hammond, L Hutton and Gary Sobers held the record for highest test match score before Brain Lara broke Gary Sober's 36 years old record in 1994 with his 375 before making 400, taking record back from Mathew Hayden who held it for just 6 months!
