Interesting Facts About Austria Country

1. There are about 8.5 million people that live in Austria.  It has borders with Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, and Switzerland.

2. The official language is German, other languages used include Hungarian, Croatian, Slovene, Czech, Slovak, Italian, and English.

3. The name Austria comes from the Bavarian dialect of the word Ostarrichi, believed to have been translated from an earlier Celtic language name of Norig, meaning the eastern realm.

4. About 75% of Austria is considered to be in the Alps and is divided into nine states, those being Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, Tyrol, Carinthia, Salzburg, Vorarlberg, and Burgenland.

5. The largest city in Austria is Vienna with 1.7 million people, followed by Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Villach, Wels, Sankt Polten, and Dornbirn.

6. The currency used in Austria is the Euro, EUR.

7. Famous people from Austria include the musician Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the painter Gustav Klimt, the psychologist Sigmund Freud, and the poet Rainer Maria Rilke.

8. Well known cuisine from Austria includes Wiener Schnitzel, Apfestrudel, Kaiserschmarm, Schweinsbraten, and different cakes or Tortes.   Dishes can be both regional and seasonal, with some areas offering more fish (carp or trout), others have game such as venison on the menu, and others with more vegetables such as potatoes or asparagus.

9. For beverages, you get a wide variety of coffee, beers are generally a pale lager (Marzen) or wheat beer, and you’ll find wine mostly in the eastern and southern areas.

10. There are about 23 million travelers or tourists to Austria each year, almost 3 times the actual population and the 7th highest in all of Europe.
